Letter ङ (nga)

ङ — Letter (nga)

  • Closest English sound anchor: sing (ending sound, not word-initial in English)
sing
  • Hindi teaching syllable: ङा ('ngaa')
ङा

Say the English anchor, then the Hindi word, and focus on how aspiration and voicing change across the group.

Half Letter ङ् (nga halant)

In Hindi, adding the virama (्) below ङ creates the half letter ङ् — it silences the inherent 'a' vowel and makes this consonant join the next one without a vowel between them.
Ways to write the half letter:
1. Halant form: ङ्   (the virama ् appears below the full letter)2. Conjunct form: When ङ् is followed by another consonant, the two letters merge visually into a conjunct (e.g. ङ्क = ङ्क). Some conjuncts develop unique shapes; these are learned as whole units.
Example words using ङ्: - अङ्क ('anka') — Number / Mark - रङ्ग ('rang') — Colour - भङ्ग ('bhang') — Breaking / Hemp - सङ्घ ('sangh') — Association / Group - पतङ्ग ('patang') — Kite
