How to Redact and Rephrase Safely (Topic 2) in Module 1 – Use-AI-Safely-Effectively (BG)

How to Redact and Rephrase Safely

Many useful AI tasks do not require the original sensitive data. The skill is learning how to remove what is identifying while preserving what is structurally important.

Redaction means removing exposure, not just hiding visually

If a document contains names, addresses, account numbers, student identifiers, or internal project names, remove them entirely or replace them with placeholders like [CLIENT_NAME] or [PROJECT_X].

Rephrase the task around the pattern

Unsafe prompt: Rewrite this customer complaint email followed by a full real email.

Safer prompt: Rewrite the following complaint email in a calm, professional tone. Replace all names with placeholders. Keep the facts but simplify the language.

Keep only the minimum needed

If you only need help with tone, grammar, structure, or summarization, you usually do not need real identifying details at all. Remove anything unrelated to the specific help you want.

Build placeholder discipline

A strong habit is to create reusable placeholders: [CUSTOMER_NAME], [DATE], [AMOUNT], [PRODUCT_NAME]. This makes your prompt reusable and safer at the same time.
