Prompt for Structure, Scope, and Constraints (Topic 1) in Module 2 – Use-AI-Safely-Effectively (BG)

Prompt for Structure, Scope, and Constraints

Vague prompts create vague answers. The safer and more effective pattern is to constrain the task. Tell the model what role to play, what output shape to use, what it must not do, and how concise or cautious it should be.

A strong prompt usually includes

  • the task goal
  • the audience
  • the format you want
  • any limits or exclusions
  • the standard for success

Example

Weak: Explain this to me.

Stronger: Explain this policy to a new employee in five bullet points. Do not invent any details that are not present in the text. End with two follow-up questions I should ask my manager.

Why structure improves safety

Structured prompts reduce ambiguity. When you ask for bullet points, assumptions, or a confidence note, you make the output easier to review and harder to mistake for a polished truth source.

Constraints are a safety tool

Adding phrases like If the information is missing, say so or Do not guess can materially improve how usable and reviewable the answer is.
